Vehicle handling

You're on a motorway in very heavy rain. Spray from lorries is cutting your visibility. What should you do?

  • Move closer to the vehicle in front to follow its lights
  • Switch on your main beam to see through the spray
  • Drop back and switch on your dipped headlights so you can see and be seen
    Correct
  • Turn on your hazard lights and keep your speed up

Why?

Rule 227 of The Highway Code says wet weather at least doubles your stopping distance, and rain and spray make it hard to see and be seen. Drop well back and use dipped headlights; main beam would only reflect off the spray and dazzle you.

Highway Code rules 227, 226
