As you drive round a bend, the front of your car starts to run wide and the steering feels light. What should you do?
- Brake hard to bring the front back in line
- Steer more sharply into the bend
- Press the accelerator to pull the front round
- Ease off the accelerator and let the front tyres regain gripCorrect
Why?
Rule 119 of The Highway Code says a skid is caused by braking, accelerating or steering too harshly, or driving too fast. When the front tyres lose grip and the car runs wide (understeer), ease off the accelerator and avoid extra steering so the tyres can grip again.
