Vehicle handling

You are approaching a level crossing and the way is open. When should you drive onto the crossing?

  • As soon as the barrier lifts, even if traffic is queuing ahead
  • Whenever the car in front moves, without checking further
  • Only when the road is clear on the other side, so you will not have to stop on the crossing
    Correct
  • After sounding your horn to warn any train

Why?

Rule 291 of The Highway Code says you should approach and cross a level crossing with care, and never drive onto it until the road is clear on the other side. Do not get too close to the vehicle in front, so you are never trapped on the crossing.
