Vehicle handling

You are driving on a country road. How should you deal with the bends ahead?

  • Keep a steady high speed, as country bends are gentle
  • Slow down on the approach, as bends can be sharper than they look
    Correct
  • Brake hard once you are already in the bend
  • Cut across the middle of the road to straighten the bend

Why?

Rule 154 of The Highway Code says to take extra care on country roads and reduce your speed at bends, which can be sharper than they appear, and at hidden junctions. Be ready for pedestrians, horse riders and slow farm vehicles.
