Vehicle handling
In normal driving conditions, what is the safest way to use your brakes when slowing to a stop?
- Brake early and lightly, then more firmly, easing off just before you stopCorrect
- Leave all your braking until the last moment
- Brake as hard as possible straight away
- Pump the brake pedal on and off
Why?
Rule 117 of The Highway Code says the safest way to brake is to do it early and lightly, braking more firmly as you begin to stop and easing the pressure off just before the car comes to rest, to avoid a jerky stop.
