As you approach a junction you roll up to it with the clutch held down. Why is this 'coasting' a problem?
- It uses more fuel than staying in gear
- It makes the brake lights come on early
- You lose engine braking and some control just when you may need to reactCorrect
- It is only a problem on motorways
Why?
Rule 122 of The Highway Code says coasting with the clutch down or in neutral removes engine braking and reduces your control of the car. Approaching a junction is exactly where you may need to react quickly, so stay in gear.
