Vehicle handling
You are driving over a level crossing that has a rough, uneven surface. What is the safest way to cross?
- Stop on the crossing to check both ways for trains
- Change down through the gears while on the rails
- Reverse back if the ride feels bumpy
- Keep moving steadily across and do not stop on the crossingCorrect
Why?
Rule 291 of The Highway Code says you must never stop or park on a level crossing. Keep moving steadily across a rough crossing rather than stopping or changing gear on it, which could stall the engine and leave you stranded on the rails.
