Vehicle handling
Your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS). On a loose gravel or snow-covered road, what should you remember?
- ABS will always stop you in a shorter distance
- You can brake as late as you like
- ABS lets you follow the car in front closely
- ABS may not shorten your stopping distance, so slow down and leave a big gapCorrect
Why?
Rule 120 of The Highway Code notes that the safety benefits of ABS can be reduced on loose or slippery surfaces, and it does not guarantee a shorter stopping distance. Drive to the conditions, slow down and leave a much larger gap.
