Vulnerable road users
Traffic lights are red and there is a marked cycle area (advanced stop line) ahead of you. Where should you stop?
- Inside the cycle area, as close to the junction as possible
- At the first white line, leaving the cycle area clear for cyclistsCorrect
- Anywhere, as the markings are only advisory
- Across the cycle area if no cyclists are there yet
Why?
Rule 178 of The Highway Code says you should stop at the first white line and leave the marked cycle area clear. This lets cyclists position themselves ahead of you and move off safely when the lights change.
