Vulnerable road users

You have parked and are about to open your door on the side facing the road. How can you best check for cyclists?

  • Open the door quickly so you are not in the way
  • Rely on your door mirror only
  • Open the door with the hand nearest it
  • Open the door with your far hand, which makes you turn and look behind
    Correct

Why?

Rule 239 of The Highway Code recommends the 'Dutch Reach': open the door with the hand on the opposite side to it. This makes you turn your body and look over your shoulder for cyclists and other road users.
