Vulnerable road users

You are turning into a side road that has a zebra crossing just after the corner, with a pedestrian on it. What should you do?

  • Complete your turn before they reach your path
  • Wait and give way until the crossing is clear
    Correct
  • Turn slowly around the pedestrian
  • Expect them to stop and let you turn in

Why?

The pedestrian on the crossing has priority. Rule 195 of The Highway Code says you must give way to anyone on a zebra crossing, so hold back and let them finish before you complete your turn into the side road.
