Vulnerable road users

You have a green traffic light and are turning left. Pedestrians are already crossing the road you are turning into. What should you do?

  • Turn quickly as the green light gives you priority
  • Give way to the pedestrians before completing your turn
    Correct
  • Edge forward to make them hurry across
  • Sound your horn and turn behind them

Why?

A green light lets you go only if the way is clear. Rules H2 and 170 of The Highway Code say you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road you are turning into, even when your light is green.

Highway Code rules H2, 170
