Alertness

You are turning left into a side road and a pedestrian has started to cross it. What should you do?

  • Give way and let the pedestrian finish crossing
    Correct
  • Turn quickly before they reach your side
  • Sound your horn so they hurry
  • Drive on, as vehicles have priority

Why?

Pedestrians crossing the road you are turning into now have priority under the updated rules. Rule 170 and rule H2 of The Highway Code say you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road into which you are turning; if they have started, they have priority.

Highway Code rules 170, H2
