Alertness

You are about to pull out to pass a parked car. What should you check for behind you before moving out?

  • Only that the parked car is empty
  • Nothing, as you are only moving a little
  • That the road ahead is clear of oncoming traffic only
  • A cyclist or motorcyclist who may be overtaking you
    Correct

Why?

As you move out around an obstruction, a cyclist or motorcyclist coming past on your right could be in your path. Rule 163 of The Highway Code says you should check your mirrors and blind spot and give way to oncoming and overtaking traffic before moving out to pass a parked vehicle.
