Attitude
A driver behind you is following too closely. What is the safest way to react?
- Brake sharply to warn the driver behind
- Speed up to increase the gap behind you
- Flash your brake lights by tapping the pedal
- Slow down gradually and leave more room in front of youCorrect
Why?
When someone is following too closely, braking suddenly could cause a crash. Rule 126 of The Highway Code says you must leave enough space to stop; if a driver is tailgating you, ease off gently and increase the gap in front so you can brake softly and avoid a sudden stop.
