Attitude

When is it acceptable to sound your horn while driving in a built-up area at night?

  • To greet a friend you notice on the pavement
  • To let a pedestrian know it's safe to cross
  • Only to alert another road user to a danger
    Correct
  • To express annoyance at another driver's mistake

Why?

Rule 112 of The Highway Code says the horn should only be used to warn other road users of your presence when necessary, never to greet people, show anger, or as a signal to pedestrians. In a built-up area you must not sound it between 11.30 pm and 7.00 am unless another vehicle poses a danger.
