Attitude

You are driving on an unlit road at night and a vehicle is coming towards you. What should you do with your headlights?

  • Keep them on full beam so you can see further
  • Dip them so you do not dazzle the oncoming driver
    Correct
  • Switch them off until the vehicle has passed
  • Flash between full and dipped beam repeatedly

Why?

Rule 115 of The Highway Code tells you to keep your headlights dipped when meeting oncoming traffic at night, so you do not dazzle the other driver. Full beam should only be used when it will not affect anyone else.

Highway Code rules 114, 115
