Roadworks ahead reduce two lanes to one, and a sign asks drivers to merge in turn. What should you do?
- Move into the open lane as early as possible and block the closing lane
- Stay in your lane until the merge point and take turns with the other laneCorrect

- Ignore the other lane completely, since you signalled first
Why?
Rule 288 of The Highway Code covers roadworks and says that where lanes are closed due to obstructions, you should merge in turn close to the point where the lanes merge, taking turns with traffic in the other lane. This keeps traffic flowing smoothly and is fairer than racing ahead to block the closing lane early.
