Attitude

You are turning left into a side road and a cyclist beside you is going straight ahead. Who should you give way to?

  • Yourself, because a car has priority over a bike
  • Neither, so turn across the cyclist quickly
  • The cyclist, and do not cut across their path
    Correct
  • Whoever reaches the junction line first

Why?

Rule 183 of The Highway Code says you should give way to cyclists when changing direction or lane and must not cut across them. Rule H3 also tells drivers not to turn across a cyclist going straight ahead; wait behind them and let them pass.

Highway Code rules 183, H3
