Attitude

Traffic is slow-moving and a driver waiting at a side road is trying to join your lane. What is the courteous action?

  • Close the gap so that they cannot pull in
  • Sound your horn to warn them to stay back
  • Where it is safe, ease off and leave a gap for them
    Correct
  • Speed up so that you are not delayed at all

Why?

Rule 147 of The Highway Code asks you to be considerate and cooperative towards other road users. In slow-moving traffic, easing off to let a waiting driver merge keeps traffic flowing smoothly and is safer than deliberately blocking them out.
