A cyclist is ahead of you on a narrow road and you cannot leave enough room to pass safely. What should you do?
- Squeeze past in the small space that is there
- Sound your horn so the cyclist pulls in
- Drive close behind to make them speed up
- Wait patiently until you can pass with enough roomCorrect
Why?
Rule 163 of The Highway Code says leave at least 1.5 metres when passing a cyclist at up to 30 mph, and if you cannot, you should wait. Being patient and holding back until it is safe is far better than a dangerous close pass.
