You are a new driver in your first two years after passing. Why should you take extra care to avoid penalty points?

  • Points cost more money for new drivers
  • New drivers cannot appeal any fine
  • Just 6 points can cause your licence to be revoked
    Correct
  • New drivers must display green plates by law

Why?

During the two-year probationary period after passing your first test, getting 6 or more penalty points causes your licence to be revoked, after which you must reapply and retake both tests. Experienced drivers only face this at 12 points. These penalties are listed in Annex 5 of The Highway Code.
