You are passing a horse and rider on the road. Why should you not sound your horn?

  • The noise could startle the horse and make it bolt
    Correct
  • Using a horn in daytime is never allowed
  • The rider cannot hear a horn anyway
  • It would waste your car battery

Why?

Rule 214 of The Highway Code says not to scare animals by sounding your horn, revving your engine or accelerating. A sudden noise can frighten a horse into bolting, putting the rider and other road users in danger. Pass slowly and quietly.
