Rules of the road

The traffic lights ahead show green, but the road just beyond a yellow box junction is blocked. What must you do?

  • Enter the box because the lights are green
  • Drive into the box and wait for a gap
  • Sound your horn to clear the way
  • Wait before the box until your exit is clear
    Correct

Why?

A green light does not give you the right to block a junction. Rule 174 of The Highway Code says you must not enter a yellow box junction until your exit road or lane is clear, even when the traffic lights are green.
