Rules of the road

You are parking at night on a road with a speed limit of 40 mph. What must you do?

  • Nothing extra is needed at 40 mph
  • Leave your parking (side) lights on
    Correct
  • Leave your headlights on full beam
  • Park facing against the traffic flow

Why?

Rule 249 of The Highway Code says all vehicles must display parking lights when parked on a road, or a lay-by, with a speed limit greater than 30 mph. A 40 mph road is over that limit, so you must leave your parking lights on so others can see you.
