Safety and your vehicle

How can badly under-inflated tyres affect your car?

  • They make the steering feel lighter and quicker
  • They improve grip and shorten your braking distance
  • They increase fuel use and can make the car harder to control
    Correct
  • They have no effect as long as the tyre is not flat

Why?

A tyre with too little air drags on the road, so the engine burns more fuel and the tyre wears out faster and can overheat. It also makes the car feel heavy and less stable, especially in a bend. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says you must keep tyres correctly inflated, so check the pressures regularly when the tyres are cold.
