Vehicle handling
You are driving up a long, steep hill. How can you keep the best control and power?
- Stay in a high gear and let the speed drop
- Put the car in neutral near the top
- Press the clutch down as you climb
- Select a lower gear to keep the engine pulling steadilyCorrect
Why?
Rule 160 of The Highway Code says that once moving you should drive in the correct gear for the conditions. On a steep uphill a lower gear keeps the engine pulling and gives steady power and control, rather than letting the car labour in too high a gear.
