Vehicle handling

You are driving up a long, steep hill. How can you keep the best control and power?

  • Stay in a high gear and let the speed drop
  • Put the car in neutral near the top
  • Press the clutch down as you climb
  • Select a lower gear to keep the engine pulling steadily
    Correct

Why?

Rule 160 of The Highway Code says that once moving you should drive in the correct gear for the conditions. On a steep uphill a lower gear keeps the engine pulling and gives steady power and control, rather than letting the car labour in too high a gear.
