Your car has seatbelts fitted for five people. Can you legally carry six passengers if everyone agrees to share belts?

  • Yes, as long as the journey is short
  • Yes, if the extra passenger is a child
  • No, you must never carry more passengers than seatbelts fitted
    Correct
  • Yes, if the extra passenger sits in the front footwell

Why?

Rule 99 of The Highway Code makes clear that you must never carry more passengers than the number of seatbelts fitted in the vehicle. Sharing a belt between two people leaves both without proper protection in a crash and is against the law.
