You carry your dog in the boot area of a hatchback. What is a suitable way to keep it there safely?

  • Fit a dog guard between the boot and the seats
    Correct
  • Let it climb freely over the seats
  • Leave the tailgate slightly open for air
  • Let it sit on the parcel shelf

Why?

Rule 57 of The Highway Code says dogs and other animals must be suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or injure anyone if you stop quickly. A dog guard or barrier fitted behind the seats keeps the dog in the boot area and out of the passenger space.
