Vehicle loading

You are packing heavy cases into the boot. Where should the heaviest ones go for the best stability?

  • Piled on top of the lighter cases
  • Low down and towards the front of the boot
    Correct
  • Right at the back against the tailgate
  • Balanced on the parcel shelf

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says to distribute the weight sensibly so the load does not upset the vehicle's balance. Placing the heaviest cases low and towards the front of the boot, near the rear axle, keeps the centre of gravity low and the car stable.
