Vehicle loading

You are carrying loose material such as sand or garden rubble in a trailer. What must you do?

  • Fill the trailer above the sides for value
  • Drive fast so nothing has time to blow out
  • Sheet or cover it so nothing blows or falls out
    Correct
  • Leave it uncovered so it dries in the wind

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says a load must be secure and must not fall from the vehicle. Loose material can blow or spill out onto the road and endanger others, so it must be sheeted or covered and kept below the sides of the trailer.
