Vehicle loading

You are carrying a tall load on the roof and meet a strong crosswind on an exposed road. What should you do?

  • Take both hands off to feel the wind
  • Hold the wheel firmly and be ready for buffeting
    Correct
  • Speed up to punch through the wind
  • Ignore it, as roof loads are unaffected

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code warns that a load affects the handling of your vehicle. A tall roof load catches the wind, so in a strong crosswind hold the wheel firmly, slow down and be ready for sudden buffeting that can push you off line.
