Vehicle loading
You are carrying a tall load on the roof and meet a strong crosswind on an exposed road. What should you do?
- Take both hands off to feel the wind
- Hold the wheel firmly and be ready for buffetingCorrect
- Speed up to punch through the wind
- Ignore it, as roof loads are unaffected
Why?
Rule 98 of The Highway Code warns that a load affects the handling of your vehicle. A tall roof load catches the wind, so in a strong crosswind hold the wheel firmly, slow down and be ready for sudden buffeting that can push you off line.
