Vehicle loading
You're towing a trailer and it begins to swing from side to side (snaking). What should you do?
- Brake hard to stop the swinging quickly
- Steer sharply against the swing
- Ease off the accelerator and slow down gentlyCorrect
- Speed up to pull the trailer straight
Why?
If a trailer starts to snake, the safest response is to ease off the accelerator and let your speed drop slowly. Braking hard or steering sharply can make the swinging worse and cause you to lose control. Fitting a stabiliser helps prevent snaking. Rules 98 and 160 of The Highway Code cover towing safely and keeping full control.
