Vehicle loading

What does a vehicle's maximum authorised mass (MAM) tell you?

  • The fastest speed it may be driven
  • The most fuel its tank can hold
  • The heaviest it may weigh when fully loaded
    Correct
  • The number of seats it must have

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says you must not overload your vehicle. The maximum authorised mass, shown on the maker's plate, is the heaviest the vehicle may legally weigh including passengers and load; going over it is illegal and makes the vehicle unsafe to steer and stop.
