Essential documents

You legally change your name. What must you do about your driving licence?

  • Keep the old name until the licence expires
  • Nothing, as names are not checked
  • Tell the DVLA so the licence shows your new name
    Correct
  • Simply write the new name on the licence yourself

Why?

You must tell the DVLA when you change your name so your driving licence shows your correct legal name. You must not alter the licence yourself, as that makes it invalid. Keeping your licence details correct is part of the document rules in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
