Vehicle loading

You are loading a small trailer. How should you place the load from side to side to help prevent snaking?

  • Balanced evenly across both sides
    Correct
  • Piled entirely on the right-hand side
  • Piled entirely on the left-hand side
  • Stacked as high as it will go on one side

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says to distribute the weight evenly. A trailer loaded heavier on one side is unbalanced and far more likely to start snaking at speed, so spread the load evenly across the width and keep it low over the axle.
