Why does the caravan's nose weight on the tow ball matter?

  • It changes the colour of the tow ball
  • It only affects how the caravan looks
  • Too little or too much makes the outfit unstable
    Correct
  • It has no effect once you are moving

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says to ensure a suitable download on the tow ball and not to exceed the maker's limit. Too little nose weight lets the caravan snake, while too much overloads the car's rear axle; the ideal is usually a small download of about 5 to 7 percent of the laden weight.
