Vehicle loading

You are carrying a ladder that projects more than one metre beyond the back of your car. What must you do with the end?

  • Leave it plain if the ladder is light
  • Make it clearly visible, such as with a red flag
    Correct
  • Paint the whole ladder white
  • Fold your rear seats down

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says a load must not stick out dangerously and must be made visible. By law a load projecting more than one metre at the rear must be clearly marked, for example with a bright flag or material, so others can see it; beyond two metres, proper marker boards are required.
